Why a gradient helps
A uniform saturated layer removes the animal’s ability to choose. A gradient lets it move toward damper or drier conditions as it needs, which reduces stress.
How to create one
Hydrate the lower layer more fully and keep the surface slightly drier, or vary depth and shading across the enclosure so different areas dry at different rates.
Use ventilation deliberately
Adjust ventilation so one part of the enclosure dries faster. This creates a lasting gradient without constant intervention.
Observe the animal
Where the animal chooses to spend time tells you whether the gradient suits it. Adjust based on behaviour rather than assumption.
