Use consistent water
Use the same dechlorinated water you would provide for the animal. Inconsistent water quality changes how the material hydrates and performs.
Avoid hard or saline water
Dissolved minerals reduce absorption and can leave residue as the gel dries. If your water is hard, expect lower water uptake.
Do not add treatments to the substrate
Medications and additives should be administered as directed for the animal, not mixed into the substrate unless specifically advised by a veterinarian.
Check temperature
Hydrate with water at room temperature. Very cold or hot water changes swelling behaviour and can affect how evenly the material hydrates.
