Accidental ingestion happens
Amphibians may take up substrate particles while feeding, particularly with small hydrated beads. This is the main safety concern with loose substrates.
Reduce the risk
Feed in a separate area or on a dish, use larger particle sizes, and keep the substrate away from feeding spots where practical.
Choose material carefully
Use material supplied for this purpose and avoid improvised products not intended for animal contact. Additives, colourants or fragrances have no place in an enclosure.
Seek help if concerned
If you suspect an animal has ingested substrate or is showing signs of distress, contact a veterinarian experienced with amphibians promptly.
