Warm enclosures dry faster
Higher temperature increases evaporation, so substrate loses moisture more quickly and needs more frequent topping up in warm conditions.
Cold slows release
In cooler conditions the gel holds moisture longer and humidity may stay higher than expected. Adjust misting rather than adding more water.
Avoid heating directly under it
Heat mats or elements in direct contact with hydrated substrate can create hot spots and dry the layer unevenly. Position heat sources carefully and check regularly.
Measure at animal level
Place probes where the animal actually lives. Readings taken near a heat source or at the top of the enclosure are misleading.
