The most frequent error is sizing from deionized water capacity. Real liquids contain salts and organics that reduce absorption, sometimes by half, which leads to under-dosing and visible failure in the field.
Dumping a full dose into liquid causes lumps with dry cores, wasting material and leaving an uneven gel. Gradual addition with continuous agitation gives better dispersion and usually needs less powder to reach the same result.
Specifying capacity without checking uptake speed leaves free liquid during the window that matters. If your process allows only seconds or a few minutes, test for speed and choose accordingly, even at some cost in capacity.
Leaving bags open or storing in humid conditions silently degrades performance before the product is ever used. Keep packaging sealed, rotate stock, and re-test material that has been open or in storage for a long period.
