Common customisation levers include particle size distribution, absorption capacity, absorption rate, gel strength and tolerance to salts or freeze-thaw cycling. Packaging, labelling and private label supply can usually be tailored as well.
These properties are linked. Faster uptake usually means finer particles, which increases dust. Higher capacity usually means a softer gel that releases liquid more easily under load. Decide which one or two properties matter most before specifying.
Custom grades typically move from laboratory evaluation to a trial batch and then to production. Validate on your actual equipment with your actual liquid, because laboratory conditions rarely reproduce plant shear, temperature and contact time.
Once a sample performs well, record its key measured values as the acceptance baseline in your supply agreement. This is the most reliable way to avoid the common situation where the sample performs well but production material does not.
