Most ice pack fills consist of water, super absorbent polymer and a small amount of thickener. Water provides the cooling mass, the polymer locks it into a gel, and the thickener tunes viscosity and reduces liquid separation after cycling.
A modest thickener level improves dispersion of the polymer, reduces settling during filling and lowers syneresis after freezing. Too much makes the mix heavy to pump and slow to fill, so increase it gradually and test each level.
Hard or mineral-rich water lowers absorption substantially. Design the formulation using the water you will actually run in production, and consider a salt-tolerant grade if conductivity is high.
Laboratory mixing does not reproduce plant shear. Validate addition order, mixing time and maturation period on the real filling line, then write the parameters into a work instruction so batches stay consistent.
