Hydrated substrate does not break down quickly, but it steadily loses water. In a typical enclosure it needs topping up every few days depending on ventilation and temperature.
Visible shrinkage, firmer texture and falling humidity readings all indicate it is time to add water. Waiting until it looks dry is usually too late.
Replace when the material is soiled, discoloured, has developed persistent odour, or no longer holds moisture well after rehydration.
Preparing a fresh batch in advance means a change can be done in minutes rather than leaving an animal in poor conditions while substrate hydrates.
