Use a reliable hygrometer
A decent digital hygrometer placed at animal level gives usable readings. Cheap analogue gauges are often inaccurate enough to mislead.
Check at several times
Read humidity in the morning and evening, and before and after misting. A single reading tells you very little about stability.
Look at the trend
The useful information is how much humidity falls between interventions. A substrate that holds a flatter curve is doing its job.
Adjust based on data
Change substrate depth, hydration level or ventilation based on measured patterns rather than on how the enclosure looks.
