Pots and trays hold a small volume of substrate that is exposed on all sides. Evaporation is rapid, and short interruptions in irrigation quickly show as wilting. A small addition of gel buffers the substrate against those gaps.
Container volume is limited, so overdosing is easy. Rates around half to one gram per litre of substrate are typical. Paler, softer gels with high capacity also reduce air-filled porosity, which roots need.
After adding gel, the wet-dry cycle slows. Reduce watering frequency and check substrate moisture or pot weight rather than watering on a fixed schedule, otherwise the medium stays wet and root disease pressure rises.
Fine powder disperses evenly in a mix but can generate dust and clog drip emitters if it migrates. Coarser granules are safer with drip systems. Reapply at each repotting, since performance declines as the substrate ages.
