How often
Replacement frequency depends on stocking, species and how well the enclosure is spot cleaned. Change material when it becomes soiled, discoloured or difficult to keep clean.
Change in stages
Replacing the entire substrate at once removes beneficial conditions and can stress animals. Replacing part of the layer at a time is usually gentler.
Clean the enclosure too
Remove the old material, clean and dry the enclosure surfaces, and check decor before adding fresh substrate. Cleaning only the substrate leaves problems behind.
Dispose responsibly
Do not dispose of hydrated material down sinks or drains, since it can swell and cause blockages. Bag it and dispose with household waste.
