Watch for shrinkage
As the gel releases moisture it visibly shrinks and firms up. That is the signal to add water rather than waiting for the substrate to look dry.
Top up gradually
Add small amounts of water and mix through rather than flooding the layer. Flooding creates saturated pockets that take a long time to even out.
Mist the surface
Light misting maintains surface humidity between fuller rehydrations and refreshes the layer where the animal actually contacts it.
Keep a routine
Check substrate condition on a fixed schedule. Regular small adjustments keep conditions stable far better than occasional large corrections.
