Absorption depends on the difference in ion concentration between the polymer network and the surrounding liquid. Dissolved salts shrink that difference, so the network takes up less liquid. Leachate is typically at the saline end of the range.
The reduction depends on ionic strength and varies widely between landfills and between seasons. Measured capacity in leachate can be a fraction of the deionized water figure, which is why water-based data should never be used for sizing.
A conductivity reading gives a quick indication of ionic strength and a rough sense of how much capacity will be lost. It is a useful screening tool before running full jar tests on several grades.
Test candidate grades side by side in the same leachate and rank them by retained capacity and uptake speed. The grade that loses least relative to its clean-water figure is usually the better choice.
About FLORPOLY: FLORPOLY supplies super absorbent polymer for leachate and liquid waste solidification, including salt-tolerant grades for high ionic strength streams. Particle size, uptake speed and gel strength can be matched to the mixing equipment and site conditions. Contact FLORPOLY for a specification sheet, free sample or application advice.
