Under normal field conditions most agricultural gels remain effective for roughly two to three years. Actual life depends on soil type, climate, placement depth and product quality rather than on a single fixed number.
Ultraviolet exposure at the surface, repeated freezing and thawing, mechanical disturbance and microbial activity all accelerate breakdown. Material left on the surface degrades far faster than the same product incorporated into the profile.
Burying the gel in the root zone, combining it with organic matter and avoiding unnecessary tillage all help. Sandy soils tend to preserve performance longer than heavy, biologically active clays.
Watch how quickly the root zone dries after rain and how crops respond during dry spells. Where the difference against untreated ground has faded, a supplementary application in the expanding root zone restores the effect.
