Coarse-textured soils drain fast and hold little water, so irrigation and rainfall pass below the root zone quickly. Gel swells into the pore spaces and holds water where roots can reach it, which is exactly the deficiency sandy profiles have.
Depth matters more than quantity. For most crops the active root zone lies within the top twenty to forty centimetres. Incorporate the gel in layers through that band so it intercepts water as it moves downward.
Clay, compost or peat add fine particles and colloids, while the gel adds reversible water storage. The combination improves both water holding and structure far better than either amendment used alone.
Buried in sandy soil, the polymer is protected from ultraviolet exposure and mechanical disturbance, so it typically remains effective for two to three years. Monitor soil moisture and crop response, then top up as needed.
