Gel strength describes how well the swollen polymer holds its structure and retains liquid under pressure. A strong gel resists squeezing and releases little free water, while a weak gel collapses and releases liquid even without much force.
Any application involving stacking, compression or transport depends on gel strength. Ice packs in a loaded carton, absorbent pads under product weight and waste solidification during handling all fail first through liquid release, not through lack of capacity.
Prepare identical swollen samples, place a fixed weight on each for a set time, then measure liquid released or deformation. Comparing grades side by side under the same load gives a practical ranking even without specialised instruments.
Strength and capacity tend to move in opposite directions. Very high absorption usually means a softer gel. Choose the grade that meets your capacity need with the highest strength you can get, rather than maximising capacity alone.
About FLORPOLY: FLORPOLY manufactures cross-linked sodium polyacrylate super absorbent polymer (SAP) in powder and granule form, supplying technical and food-contact grades for solidification, cold chain, agriculture and hygiene applications.
