SAP reduces odour indirectly by removing free liquid, which lowers the water available for microbial growth. It does not kill bacteria and it does not neutralise compounds that are already present, so claims should stay realistic.
In pads, trays and waste solidification, simply immobilising the liquid often produces a noticeable improvement. Combining absorption with good temperature control and reasonable change intervals usually addresses most practical odour complaints.
Antibacterial or deodorising additives can be incorporated, but they bring additional regulatory considerations, especially for food-contact or personal care uses. Always confirm the additive is permitted for the intended application and market before specifying it.
Persistent odour usually points to temperature abuse, long holding times or high initial microbial load. Improving the cold chain and hygiene upstream is generally more effective than relying on the absorbent material alone to solve the problem.
