Polymer water-absorbing resin, academically known as super absorbent polymer and often called SAP, is nothing like the absorbent materials we are familiar with, such as cotton, sponge, or paper towels.
Cotton and sponge store water in the pores between fibers – physical absorption. Water only sits in the voids, comes out the moment you squeeze, and the absorption ratio tops out at around a dozen times the material’s own weight. Polymer water-absorbing resin locks water chemically: the hydrophilic groups on the molecular chains hold water molecules one by one, absorbing up to hundreds of times its own weight, and you cannot squeeze it dry or shake it off.
This difference is crucial in practical applications. Why can a diaper go all night without leaking? Why does a fresh food pad keep blood water from seeping back? Why do frozen ice packs not drip? All rely on the chemical water-locking capacity of polymer water-absorbing resin.
So when selecting materials, do not compare its price with ordinary absorbent materials – they do different jobs. If you need genuine water-locking function, you must use the right material.
