Wet food waste leaks, smells, and attracts pests from bin to curb. SAP locks the free water into a stable gel so the waste stops dripping and is far easier to bag, weigh, and transport. For restaurants, markets, and centralized composting sites this cuts mess and odour complaints at the source.
Specify a food-contact-rated, salt-tolerant polyacrylate. Fine powder disperses fast into sloppy scraps; granules meter better for batch use. Avoid industrial grades with process residues; a neutral-pH hygiene grade is the safe default for anything touching food streams. Require a compliance datasheet from the supplier.
A starting ratio of roughly 1–2% SAP by weight, mixed or tumbled, binds the liquid within seconds into a non-pourable mass. For very wet loads, add in two passes. Define the dose in your SOP and validate by the target texture—spoonable gel, not free slurry.
Bag the solidified gel like normal organic waste per local rules. Wash tools and hands after handling, and never rinse unused SAP down the drain—it swells and can clog pipes. Stored dry, the powder keeps its capacity for a long shelf life, lowering reorder frequency.
