Fine particles
Finer material hydrates into a smoother, more uniform gel that suits small enclosures and species that rest on the surface. It can be more easily tracked around by active animals.
Coarser particles
Coarser hydrated beads hold their shape better and resist being kicked into corners or into water dishes. They suit larger enclosures and more active species.
Ingestion consideration
Very small hydrated particles are more likely to be taken up accidentally during feeding. Where accidental ingestion is a concern, larger particle sizes are generally preferable.
Decide for the animal
Choose based on the species, its feeding behaviour and how the enclosure is arranged, rather than on appearance alone.
