What it provides
Hydrated polymer substrate holds a large amount of water in a stable gel and releases it slowly, which helps maintain the high humidity that most amphibians require between misting sessions.
Why keepers use it
Compared with loose damp media, hydrated polymer is light, clean to handle and does not compact into an anaerobic layer as quickly. It also makes spot cleaning straightforward because soiled material can be removed in one piece.
Important limitation
It is a humidity tool, not a complete habitat. Amphibians still need hides, a proper temperature gradient, clean water and species-appropriate furnishing. Substrate alone does not make an enclosure suitable.
