Thawing happens at chilled temperatures where absorption is slower than at room temperature. A pad tested only at room temperature may perform poorly in service.
Evaluate candidate pads in a chilled cabinet at the temperature the product will actually thaw at. This is usually the limiting condition.
Cold generally firms the gel, which helps rewet resistance, but slows uptake. The balance usually still favours testing in realistic conditions.
If a loaded pad freezes, expansion on thawing can break the gel and release liquid. Keep loaded pads above freezing.
