Artificial snow is made by adding water to super absorbent polymer and letting it expand into a white, fluffy mass. The powder absorbs many times its weight, and the swollen particles take on a light, snow-like appearance.
Sprinkle the powder into water rather than pouring water onto powder. Adding powder to a generous volume of water with gentle stirring gives a more even expansion and avoids dry pockets trapped inside clumps.
Let the material stand until it has reached its final volume, usually several minutes to half an hour depending on grade and temperature. Judging too early leads to adding more powder than necessary.
Once expanded, break the mass apart gently by hand to open the texture. This step does most of the work in turning a dense gel into something that reads as snow.
