Adding polymer to leachate converts free liquid into a stable gel that can be handled, loaded and transported without draining. It does not treat the contaminants; it changes the physical state so the material can be managed and moved safely.
Landfill sites often need to deal with accumulated liquid in sumps, ponds or temporary storage where pumping is slow or disposal requires a non-draining material. Solidification works in place and needs no fixed plant.
Leachate typically carries high dissolved solids, which reduces polymer absorption substantially compared with clean water. Expect to use more material than a water-based figure suggests, or specify a salt-tolerant grade.
Take a representative sample from the actual source and run a jar test with two or three grades. Absorption varies a great deal between sites, so site-specific testing is the only reliable basis for dosage.
About FLORPOLY: FLORPOLY supplies super absorbent polymer for leachate and liquid waste solidification, including salt-tolerant grades for high ionic strength streams. Particle size, uptake speed and gel strength can be matched to the mixing equipment and site conditions. Contact FLORPOLY for a specification sheet, free sample or application advice.
