Water expands as it freezes, and ice crystals forming inside the swollen gel physically disrupt the polymer network. Repeated cycles accumulate damage, so the gel releases water more easily and eventually breaks down into a slurry.
Cold temperate regions, high elevations and sites with frequent freeze-thaw swings need a grade designed for this. Standard products may perform acceptably in mild climates but degrade quickly where ground freezing is routine.
Freeze a hydrated sample, thaw it at room temperature, and repeat ten cycles or more, checking each time for syneresis, loss of elasticity and breakdown. Retention of absorption capacity after cycling is the key indicator.
Apply before the ground freezes and water it in so the gel is established within the profile. After thaw, inspect soil moisture behaviour in spring and top up where performance has clearly declined.
