Hydrogel stores water; it supplies no nutrients. A fertiliser programme still has to meet crop demand, and the gel simply improves how efficiently that water and the nutrients dissolved in it are used.
Do not store the gel blended with high-analysis soluble fertiliser. The local salt concentration suppresses swelling and reduces performance. Apply organic matter and gel together, and place soluble fertiliser in a separate band or layer.
Compost improves structure and feeds the soil while also moderating the environment around the gel. Combining the two is standard practice in orchards and nurseries and generally gives more consistent results than either alone.
A workable order is to incorporate the gel with soil or compost first, then apply fertiliser, then irrigate. Irrigation activates the gel and moves nutrients into the root zone at the same time.
