Absorption rate drops as temperature falls because liquid viscosity rises and diffusion into the network slows. A grade that performs well at room temperature may be noticeably sluggish in a cold store or in winter conditions outdoors.
Elevated temperatures generally speed uptake but can soften the gel and reduce its ability to hold liquid under load. In warm applications, gel strength and retention under pressure become more important than raw capacity.
Repeated freezing and thawing mechanically damages the gel network. Ice crystals disrupt the structure, and over many cycles the polymer loses capacity and may break down into a slurry. Grades designed for freeze-thaw resistance are essential for cold chain use.
Always evaluate a candidate grade at the temperature it will actually see in service. A simple side-by-side test at room temperature and at service temperature usually reveals more than any number on a specification sheet.
