Sandless flood barriers contain super absorbent polymer inside a fabric sleeve. When soaked, the polymer swells into a heavy, stable gel that stacks like a sandbag but stores flat and light before use. This makes them far easier to stockpile and deploy quickly.
Bags are typically soaked in water for a few minutes before placement. They should be fully hydrated before being stacked, because partially swollen bags do not seat properly and leave gaps in the barrier.
Sandless bags suit doorways, kerbs, drains and low-level deflection around buildings. They are less suitable for fast-flowing water or long-duration exposure, where conventional sandbags or engineered barriers remain the safer choice.
Stored dry and sealed from moisture, unused bags keep for years and take very little space, which is the main advantage over sand. Inspect packaging periodically and keep the stock dry, since premature moisture absorption reduces capacity.
