Data sheets usually quote absorption in deionized water, which is the best case. Real liquids contain salts, proteins or organics that reduce capacity substantially. Always test with your actual fluid before sizing a purchase or setting a dosage.
Weigh a dry sample, add a measured excess of liquid, let it stand until fully swollen, then decant the free liquid and weigh the gel. The ratio of absorbed liquid to dry powder is your practical absorption ratio under real conditions.
Note how long the sample takes to reach full swell. Fast uptake matters when contact time is short, such as on a packaging line or in a spill response. A grade with slightly lower capacity but much faster uptake often performs better in practice.
Run each test three times and keep temperature consistent, because uptake slows noticeably in cold conditions. Record the liquid source, temperature and standing time so results stay comparable between batches and suppliers.
