The core of water-absorbing resin is a high-molecular material called polyacrylate. Why can it lock water so firmly? The key is its microstructure.
Its molecular chains carry large numbers of hydrophilic groups (carboxylate groups). These groups are like countless tiny hands that grab water molecules firmly on contact. At the same time, the chains are connected by crosslinking agents into a three-dimensional network. After absorbing water, the network swells, but the knot-like crosslink points hold the structure together, trapping water molecules in the network grids – they can get in but not out.
This structure determines three characteristics:
Absorbs fast – fine particles, many groups, saturated within seconds to minutes;
Absorbs a lot – hundreds of times its weight under osmotic pressure;
Locks firmly – the network holds, so pressure and jostling do not easily release water.
That is why fresh food pads keep blood water from seeping back, diapers go all night without leaking, and frozen ice packs do not drip – all thanks to this water-locking mechanism. Choose the material right, and the core performance of these products is secured.
