Some buyers assume bigger SAP granules are better – more water absorbed, more impressive. In fact, particle size has no inherent good or bad – only what fits. It all depends on where you use it.
Large granules (the 2-3 mm kind) swell visibly after absorbing water, clearly visible one by one. They suit agricultural retention agents, crystal soil, and artificial snow – products where granules are seen. But large granules have a smaller surface area and absorb relatively slowly, which is bad for products like diapers that need instant absorption.
Small granules (fine powder) have a large contact area and absorb fast, suiting diaper and sanitary napkin cores, mixed evenly with fluff pulp. But fine powder tends to clump, creates dust in processing, and demands more careful storage.
Medium granules (a few tenths to 1 mm) sit in between, balancing absorption speed and ratio – the mainstream choice for ice packs and absorbent pads.
So when choosing particle size, first think about your product form and absorption scenario, then decide the fineness. If unsure, let the manufacturer recommend and test samples. Choose the right particle size and the downstream process goes smoothly with a stable product.
