Many people think of plastic when they hear the word resin, but SAP and ordinary resin are vastly different.
Ordinary resin (such as epoxy or phenolic resin) is mainly used in coatings, adhesives, and composites, pursuing film formation, bonding, and strength. Once dry, it is hard and resistant to water and moisture. SAP is just the opposite – far from fearing water, it eagerly absorbs it, swells, and turns into a soft gel.
One repels water, the other absorbs it – completely opposite directions.
Looking deeper: ordinary resin requires good chemical stability, no water absorption, and no deformation; SAP requires fast absorption, firm water locking, and no water release under pressure. Their performance indicators are also completely different – ordinary resin is judged on hardness, heat resistance, and adhesion; SAP is judged on water absorption ratio, water retention rate, and saline absorption rate.
So never mix them up when buying materials. If you make water-absorbing products, you are looking for SAP; only for coatings and bonding do you seek ordinary resin. Both names contain the word resin, but their functions point in opposite directions.
