In the finishing industry, you cannot avoid water-based resin. Let us start with its advantages: first, it is environmentally friendly – low VOC, friendly to both construction and living environments; second, it is safe – high flash point, not easy to catch fire, and less worry in storage and transport; third, equipment cleaning is convenient – just wash with water, unlike oil-based paint which requires solvents.
Now the shortcomings. Water-based resin dries by water evaporation, so it is slower than oil-based, especially at low temperatures and high humidity – frustrating when you are racing a deadline. In addition, water has high surface tension and wets certain substrates poorly; adhesion and leveling depend on additives and formulation. There is also water resistance – some water-based films will whiten or blister in long-term water exposure.
So when choosing water-based resin, do not just listen to manufacturers’ praise. Decide based on your own construction environment and product requirements. For example, if you make outdoor metal parts, corrosion protection is the hard requirement; if you make indoor wood products, environmental friendliness and feel matter more.
There is no good or bad material – only what fits. Figure out your needs, then select against the indicators. That beats everything.
