“The powder is the same,” the buyer said on the call. “The paperwork isn’t.” He was right about the second half. His pet pad line had been running agricultural grade for eight months without a complaint, then a retail chain sent an auditor who asked for bioburden data and a skin-contact declaration. There was no answer to give, and the listing came down in a week.
Hygiene grade and agricultural grade come off the same reactor family and are separated by a set of limits, a set of documents, and a price step of 8 to 20 percent. Knowing which limits actually bind your product is the difference between paying for compliance you need and paying for a certificate nobody reads.
Both grades are sodium polyacrylate, crosslinked, in the same mesh range. What changes is the tail of the distribution. Hygiene grade holds residual acrylic acid lower, typically under 300 to 500 ppm against 800 to 1,200 ppm for agricultural, keeps bioburden under a defined count, and screens out the fine fraction below 75 microns because dust is a handling issue on a converting line. Colour is also held to a whiteness band, since a hygiene core is white and a tinted granule shows through the topsheet.
| Parameter | Hygiene grade | Agricultural grade |
|---|---|---|
| Residual acrylic acid | typically under 300 ppm | up to 1,000 ppm |
| Bioburden (TPC) | under 1,000 cfu/g, tested per lot | not routinely tested |
| Fines below 75 microns | under 3% | 5-10% |
| Colour | whiteness band specified | visual only |
A certificate of analysis with the test method named next to each value, not just a pass or fail. A safety data sheet with all sixteen sections populated, including section 14 transport status and section 9 dust hazard. A microbiological report from an accredited lab, dated within twelve months, on the specific production lot if the customer is strict. And a declaration that covers the intended contact, whether that is skin, food, or neither, signed by someone whose name is on the quality manual.
Add the plant certificate behind those four: ISO 9001 is the floor, and a hygiene customer will usually want GMP or a recognised equivalent plus an audit report. If your supplier cannot produce the certificate, the four documents are worth very little, because they describe a lot rather than a system.
The failure is rarely chemical. It is documentary and it surfaces at the worst moment, which is after your product is on a shelf. In the pet pad case the pad worked fine for eight months. The retailer’s auditor was checking a category, not a complaint, and the absence of a bioburden report was enough. Forty thousand units were pulled and the line lost the account for two seasons.
There is a cost angle that buyers often miss. Hygiene grade is not simply a dearer version of the same tonne. The extra screening step removes fines that would otherwise be sold, so the yield per reactor batch falls and the price per tonne rises by more than the certificate suggests. On a product where the powder is 6 percent of the bill of materials, that step is absorbable. On a product where it is 30 percent, it decides the retail price, and that is the point at which formulators start asking whether the end use really requires skin-contact grade or only low dust.
A second, quieter failure: agricultural grade carries more fines, and on a high-speed converting line those fines migrate to the dust collection system, which is sized for 3 percent not 8 percent. The filter blinds every shift, the operator opens a bypass, and dust settles on the web. Nobody connects the dust to the grade change until the reject rate doubles.
Before the next purchase order, ask for the four documents and the plant certificate in one email, then check that the lot number on the COA matches the bags. The water absorbing polyacrylate granule range lists which cuts are held to hygiene limits. If the answer comes back as a brochure instead of a COA, you have your answer about the grade.
