Match the pad to the product
A small portion and a large joint release very different volumes. Size the pad to the exudate volume of the specific cut rather than using one pad size for everything.
Cover the footprint
The pad should cover the area where liquid collects, usually the base of the tray. A pad that is too small leaves liquid pooling at the edges, which defeats the purpose.
Consider depth and stacking
If product is stacked or pressed into the tray, rewet resistance becomes more important than raw capacity. Firmer gel helps under these conditions.
Standardise by product category
Define pad sizes by product type and weight band. Standardisation simplifies purchasing and reduces the chance of an undersized pad being used on a wet product.
