In dry regions the main cause of planting failure is the inability of a young root system to reach reliable moisture. Gel blended into backfill creates a small reservoir at the root zone that carries the seedling through the critical first season.
Blend the polymer with excavated soil at roughly one part to ten or twenty before refilling the pit, then water it in. Never place dry powder at the bottom of the hole, because it forms a barrier that discourages root penetration.
Shrubs need only a few grams per pit; larger stock needs more. Adjust upward for sandy soils and very low rainfall, downward where precipitation is moderate. Large programmes should trial small blocks first to set the standard.
The polymer works best together with micro-catchments, mulch or stone cover that concentrate runoff into the planting basin. Harvesting gathers the water and the gel stores it where roots can use it.
