Bare-root seedlings lose moisture rapidly between lifting and planting, and survival drops with every hour of exposure. A hydrogel slurry coats the roots with a hydrated gel that keeps them moist through handling and the first days in the ground.
Add the polymer gradually to water at roughly one to three grams per litre while stirring, let it stand until fully swollen, then blend in fine soil to a consistency that clings to the roots. Overly thick slurries reduce aeration around the root collar.
Dip the full root system and move it slightly so the slurry reaches all surfaces. Avoid bunching or folding roots inside the clump, and plant soon after dipping. Do not leave treated seedlings exposed to sun and wind.
The technique is most valuable for bare-root planting, long transport and dry-season work. Containerised plants with an intact root ball usually gain more from blending gel into the backfill than from dipping.
