Water ingress along a cable or conduit can travel a long way from the original damage point and cause failures far from the breach. Superabsorbent tapes, yarns or powders swell on contact with water and block the path, limiting migration.
Effective blocking requires the swollen gel to generate enough pressure to fill voids and resist further water penetration. This depends on gel strength as much as on absorption capacity, so grades are selected for constrained swelling behaviour.
The gel must remain stable under continuous wet conditions and repeated wet-dry cycles. A grade that breaks down or leaches out over time will eventually reopen the path, so long-term stability testing is worth doing for critical installations.
Blocking materials are usually supplied as tapes or filled yarns rather than loose powder, so the polymer is held in place. Work with a converter to match particle size and swelling behaviour to the carrier structure and the cable design.
About FLORPOLY: FLORPOLY manufactures cross-linked sodium polyacrylate super absorbent polymer (SAP) in powder and granule form, supplying technical and food-contact grades for solidification, cold chain, agriculture and hygiene applications. Particle size, absorption rate and gel strength can be tailored, with OEM and private label support. Contact FLORPOLY for a specification sheet, free sample or application advice.
