For cold-chain use the polymer must absorb and hold a large multiple of water, stay gel-like near freezing, and resist breakdown under repeated freeze-thaw cycles. A consistent, food-contact-rated grade gives predictable performance across a whole production batch and simplifies your incoming QC.
Granule vs. Powder for Ice Packs
Granules meter easily and fill without dusting—suited to manual or semi-auto lines. Powder disperses fastest but needs good agitation to avoid clumps. Choose based on your filling line; specify particle-size distribution so swell behaviour is repeatable.
Absorption Capacity and Reusability
Higher-capacity SAP means more gel per pack and longer thermal mass, but very high swell can stress the seal. Balance capacity against pack geometry, and for reusable packs pick a polymer rated for many freeze-thaw cycles so it does not crumble after a few uses.
Food-Contact Safety and Supply
