Ice packs are indispensable to cold-chain logistics, and the absorbent core of an ice pack uses polymer water-absorbing resin.
There are two types of ice packs. Water-filling ice packs leave the factory as empty bags containing dry SAP granules; you fill them with water yourself, the resin absorbs and swells into gel, and after freezing you have an ice pack. Self-absorbing ice packs are submerged whole in water, absorb to saturation within minutes, and are ready to freeze. Either way, SAP is the core.
SAP brings several advantages to ice packs: first, a high absorption ratio – a small pack absorbs a lot of water, keeping the pack lightweight; second, firm water locking – no leakage even after melting, and no dripping after freezing; third, uniform swelling – the frozen pack has a neat shape.
When choosing resin for ice packs, the main factors are absorption ratio and swelling speed. Material with a high ratio and fast absorption gives longer cold retention. Particle uniformity also matters – uneven particles swell unevenly and hurt the appearance.
Friends in cold-chain logistics or ice pack production: choose the right resin and the quality of your ice packs is largely secured.
