Customers who make coatings often ask: should I use water-based or solvent-based? There is no one-size-fits-all answer – it depends on what you are making.
If your product has high environmental requirements, such as interior decoration, children’s products, or food packaging printing, then water-based is basically the only option. Today many downstream customers directly require suppliers to provide VOC test reports, and oil-based systems struggle to pass.
If your product pursues extreme performance, such as heavy-duty anti-corrosion, high gloss, or ultra-fast drying, solvent-based systems still have advantages on certain indicators. This is why oil-based systems still have a place in industry.
You also need to consider your equipment and process. Water-based resin is sensitive to temperature and humidity at the job site. Whether your production line has the right conditions and whether your workers know how to adjust are real issues. Converting to water-based is not simply swapping materials – it often means modifying equipment and reworking processes.
My advice: first test a small batch of water-based resin, run through performance, drying, and stability, then decide whether to switch. Do not trust one-sided claims. With materials, nothing beats testing it yourself.
