In the SAP formula, besides the main ingredient acrylate salt, there is an unremarkable but indispensable player: the crosslinking agent.
Its job is to connect the independent polymer chains into a three-dimensional network. Without a crosslinking agent, after absorbing water the chains disperse and the resin simply dissolves into a pot of slime. With a crosslinking agent, the chains are tied together like knots, so after swelling the resin still holds as a mass of elastic gel.
The dosage is delicate: too little, and the network is too loose – large absorption but poor water locking, releasing water under pressure; too much, and the network is too tight – water molecules cannot squeeze in, and the absorption ratio cannot rise. Crosslink density is one of the most critical control points in SAP formulation.
This is also why products all called SAP differ so much in absorption performance – the crosslinking agent dosage, type, and process control in the formula are each manufacturer’s bread and butter.
When purchasing, you do not need to understand the chemical details of crosslinking, but you can ask one question: what are your water-locking and retention data? A manufacturer that can show data generally has solid formulation skill.
